"Get out of here, woman! There's no place in my company for the likes of you!" the captain snapped at the young soldier, but he couldn't even imagine who was standing before him.

“How can you let your men live like this?” she asked. “Where are their uniforms, their proper rations? Why does this place look like a pigsty?”

The captain frowned, then smiled, mistaking her for an ordinary, defenseless girl.

“And who are you to question me? Aren't you worried about your job?”

“I'm not afraid,” Anna said calmly. “I'm ashamed. I won't wear worn-out shoes or eat food fit only for animals. We came to serve, not survive.”

He lunged forward, grabbed her collar, and growled again, “Get out! There's no place for the likes of you in my company!”

He didn't know she was anything but ordinary.
