The third task focuses on the soil. February is the last chance for bare-root plantings: they establish better if watered and then mulched immediately. Monty Don also transplants yellowing acid-loving plants, such as camellias or rhododendrons, into large pots with acidic potting mix. The fourth task is to spread 3 to 5 cm of well-rotted compost around bulbs and flower beds; this mulch limits weeds, retains moisture, and nourishes the soil.
