At 48, I never imagined I’d have to manage everything alone. Yet, for several years now, my daily life has resembled a constant race: work, bills, children, organizing the house… Every day is a to-do list that never seems to end.
When my partner left without warning, I had to learn to stay strong. Fortunately, my sister Claire came to live with us to share the expenses and support the family. Together, we built a fragile balance, based on resourcefulness and solidarity.
Like many parents, I often calculate my budget down to the last cent. Grocery shopping sometimes becomes a mental exercise: comparing prices, counting, anticipating.
That day, as I walked past the pastry section of the supermarket, I certainly didn’t think I was about to experience a moment that would mark my life.
A scene that goes straight to the heart
Near the counter, a mother seemed to be hesitating. Next to her, a little boy was holding a pack of birthday candles with a large number six on them.
The woman timidly asked for a small chocolate cake. When the payment was refused, the awkwardness became immediately palpable. She tried a second time, visibly embarrassed.
The little boy looked up at her and murmured that it didn’t matter.
