PART 2: An Introduction That Was Never Planned
Evelyn stopped beside the table, her tone gentle and apologetic.
“Girls, I’m so sorry, sir. I hope they haven’t disturbed you.”
Standing that close, Jonathan noticed the faint signs of fatigue around her eyes, the way her calm presence felt less like confidence and more like something carefully maintained through long days.
“They haven’t at all,” he said, rising to his feet out of habit. “Actually, they were explaining why I should come sit with you. Being alone at weddings can feel… heavier than people expect.”
Evelyn paused, a brief spark of hope crossing her face before she quietly pushed it aside.
“You really don’t have to do that.”
“I’d like to,” Jonathan replied, nodding toward the untouched cup of tea at his table. “I was working up the nerve to introduce myself anyway.”
A soft blush crept into her cheeks, and the smile she offered this time felt warmer, less practiced.
“Evelyn Carter,” she said, extending her hand. “And these three are my constant adventure.”
“Jonathan Hale,” he answered, a quiet warmth passing between them as their hands met.
Behind Evelyn’s back, Lily, Nora, and June flashed him eager thumbs-up.
The Table No One Chose
Evelyn’s table—number twenty-three—sat tucked away in a corner, easy to overlook unless someone was looking for it. Jonathan pulled out a chair for her, earning a brief look of surprise, as though such small gestures had become rare.
The girls climbed into their seats, barely able to contain their excitement.
“I tell them all the time not to approach people they don’t know,” Evelyn said with a tired sigh.
“But we’re very respectful about it,” Lily replied proudly.
Jonathan laughed, the sound unfamiliar but comforting, like rediscovering something he hadn’t realized he missed.
The evening unfolded more easily than he expected. The girls narrated everything happening in the room with dramatic enthusiasm, Evelyn met them with quick humor, and Jonathan found himself listening in a way he hadn’t done in years.
When the DJ invited everyone onto the dance floor, Lily sat up straight with authority.
“Dance with our mom.”
Evelyn’s face warmed. “Lily—”
“That includes you,” Nora said firmly.
“Especially him,” June added, her tone completely serious.
Jonathan held out his hand.
“There are three of them and only one of us. I don’t think we have a choice.”
