In a video published on June 26, Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard-trained gastroenterologist and liver specialist, ranked 10 common foods according to their benefits in combating fatty liver disease. Coffee came in last place, with a score of 10/10. Avocado was close behind with 9/10, while chia seeds received an 8/10. Rich in antioxidants, berries earned a 7/10, while beets received a 6/10. Surprisingly, green tea scored only 5/10, smoothies 4/10, and very ripe bananas just 3/10. Finally, freshly squeezed and commercially produced fruit juices brought up the rear with scores of 2/10 and 3/10, respectively. In fact, consuming coffee, even decaffeinated, may reduce the risk of liver disease. The reason: its antioxidant properties impact detoxification enzymes and its anti-inflammatory action. Conversely, fruit juices are false allies because they often promote the accumulation of fat in the liver. A word to the wise!
